THE ANIMALS, NATIVE TO AREAS OF NORTHERN AND CENTRAL EUROPE AND ASIA, WERE HUNTED TO EXTINCTION IN BRITAIN WITH SPEARS AND LATER RIFLES. BURGESS AND SONS IN BRAMSHAW NEAR RINGWOOD, HANTS, HAS SPENT A YEAR ADAPTING THE ENCLOSURES. HE IS FARMING WILD BOAR TO SELL WHOLE AND HALF-CARCASS MEAT, WHICH IS LOWER IN FAT AND HIGHER IN PROTEIN THAN DOMESTIC PIGS, AT HIS FARM SHOP. JAMIE SAID: -WILD BOAR ISN'T THE EASIEST OPTION FOR FARMING AS THEY HAVE MUCH SLOWER GROWTH RATES THAN DOMESTIC PIGS. -BUT THE MEAT IS LOWER IN FAT AND HIGHER IN PROTEIN, SO IT'S A HEALTHIER OPTION THAN MANY RED MEATS. -OUR METHOD OF FARMING DOESN'T DOMESTICATE THE BOAR AS WE WANT THEM TO LIVE AS NATURALLY AS POSSIBLE. -THIS ALLOWS FOR UNFORCED GROWTH AND A SIMILAR DIET TO BOAR IN THE WILD, GIVING THE BEST END RESULT AND A RICH, NUTTY FLAVOUR.- DURING THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD, WILD BOARS WERE CONSIDERED A PARTICULARLY TASTY AND POPULAR MEAT IN BRITAIN WHEN THEY ROAMED THE COUNTRYSIDE. BUT WILD BOAR WERE COMMON IN THE NEW FOREST - AN AREA WHICH WAS A POPULAR HUNTING GROUND. IN 1079, NORMAN KING OF ENGLAND WILLIAM THE CONQUERER NAMED THE AREA HIS 'NEW HUNTING FOREST' AS IT BECAME A ROYAL HUNTING FOREST.
