Nel corso dell'evento, condotto da Jack Harlow, LL Cool J e Nicki Minaj e trasmesso in 170 paesi, si sono esibiti anche i Maneskin, che in uno stage infuocato hanno suonato ‘Supermodel’. La band romana ha portato a casa il Moon Person come Best Alternative, prima volta per un artista italiano. Per loro è stato il debutto ai VMA sia come candidati che come performer, un’altra conferma del successo mondiale di critica e pubblico per la band romana. I Red Hot Chili Peppers hanno ricevuto il Global Icon Award 2022, la cosa più vicina al premio alla carriera.
