Los Angeles, 24 gennaio 2023 - Comincia ufficialmente la corsa verso gli Oscar 2023, con le nomination annunciate oggi dalla sede dell'Academy Awards a Beverly Hills, Los Angeles. Nomination al maschile visto che i registi nominati sono tutti uomini.
Per ogni categoria una lista di cinque candidati (10 per 'miglior film') che si contenderanno le statuette la sera del 12 marzo. Guida 'Everything Everywhere All at Once', con ben 11 candidature, seguito da 'Gli spiriti dell'isola' e 'Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale' (9 a testa), poi 'Elvis' (8) e 'The Fabelmans' (7). E ci sarà anche un po' di Italia a Hollywood: Le Pupille di Alice Rohrwacher è stato scelto tra i migliori cinque cortometraggi live action e Aldo Signoretti è nel team del makeup e hairstyling di Elvis di Baz Luhrmann. Nessun film italiano è stato selezionato tra i papabili per il titolo di migliore pellicola straniera.
Per le attrici la grande favorita è Cate Blanchett, già vincitrice dei Bafta e del premio della Critica, che si avvia al suo terzo Oscar con Tár. Nella cinquina è in compagnia di Michelle Yeoh per Everything Everywhere All at Once, Ana de Armas per Blonde, Andrea Riseborough per To Leslie e Michelle Williams per The Fabelmans. Gli attori candidati sono Austin Butler per Elvis, Colin Farrell per Gli Spiriti dell'Isola, Brendan Fraser per The Whale, Paul Mescal di Aftersun e Bill Nighy per Living.
Nessuna sorpresa tra registi: in lizza per l'Oscar Steven Spielberg (anche per lui sarebbe il terzo Oscar) per The Fabelmans, Todd Field, di Tár, i Daniel (Daniel Kwan e Daniel Scheinert) di Everything Everywhere All at Once, Martin McDonagh di Gli spiriti dell'isola e Ruben Ostlund di Triangle of Sadness.
Tra gli altri si contenderanno il premio per miglior film il musical Elvis, l'epopea storica sulla prima guerra mondiale Niente di nuovo sul fronte occidentale, il nuovo Avatar di James Cameron, l'autobiografico The Fabelmans firmato da Spielberg, il sequel di TopGun e il promettente Everything Everywhere All at Once, già prescelto dalla Critica.
Ad annunciare le nomination sono stati l'attrice Allison Williams e Riz Ahmed, attore e rapper britannico di origine pakistane. Le candidature sono il frutto di un voto online tra membri omologhi della stessa categoria: gli attori nominano gli attori, i montatori nominano i montatori, i registi i registi. Salvo in alcuni casi, come quello dei lungometraggi internazionali e lungometraggi d'animazione che hanno regole speciali.
