Pope Francis during his Pastoral Visit, for Celestinian Forgiveness (Perdonanza Celestiniana), in L'Aquila with the opening of the Holy Door in the churchyard of the Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio, Italy, 28 August 2022. To safely visit the Cathedral (Duomo), supported by scaffolding and not yet accessible after the earthquake, Pope Francis wore a safety helmet that was given to him by the fire brigade. The Pontiff is carrying out all the movements in a wheelchair. The Celestinian Forgiveness is a religious and historical annual event held in L'Aquila, Italy, at the end of August. It is a catholic jubilee celebration, established in 1294 by Pope Celestine V with his bull Inter sanctorum solemnia (also known as Bull of Pardon or Bull of Forgiveness). Since 2011 the celebration is a "Heritage of Italy for tradition" and in 2019 it was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. On 06 April 2009 an earthquake of 6.3 magnitude struck central Italy with its epicentre near L'Aquila. The earthquake caused damage to between 3.000 and 10.000 buildings in the city. Several buildings also collapsed. 308 people were killed by the earthquake, and approximately 1.500 people were injured. Around 65.000 people were made homeless.
