Firenze, 2 agosto 2017 – Ricordando che il 2 agosto 1955 moriva a Hartford, nel Connecticut, Wallace Stevens.

La casa era silenzio e il mondo era calma

La casa era silenzio e il mondo era calma
Il lettore divenne il libro; e la notte estiva

Era il sentire del libro
La casa era silenzio e il mondo era calma

Le parole furono dette come se il libro non ci fosse
Se non che il lettore era chino sulla pagina,

Voleva stare chino, voleva molto tanto essere
Lo studioso a cui il suo libro dice il vero, a cui

La notte estiva è come una perfezione del pensiero.
La casa era silenzio perché così doveva essere.

Il silenzio era parte del senso, parte della mente:
Il passaggio che conduce la perfezione alla pagina.

E il mondo era calmo. La verità in un mondo calmo.
In cui non c’è altro senso, essa stessa

E’ calma, essa stessa è estate e notte, essa stessa
E’ il lettore che a tarda ora chino legge.

The house was quiet and the world was calm.
The reader became the book; and summer night

Was like the conscious being of the book.
The house was quiet and the world was calm.

The words were spoken as if there was no book,
Except that the reader leaned above the page,

Wanted to lean, wanted much to be
The scholar to whom his book is true, to whom

The summer night is like a perfection of thought.
The house was quiet because it had to be.

The quiet was part of the meaning, part of the mind:
The access of perfection to the page.

And the world was calm. The truth in a calm world,
In which there is no other meaning, itself

Is calm, itself is summer and night, itself
Is the reader leaning late and reading there.
